Adipose-tissue lipoprotein lipase activity and cellularity in the genetically obese Zucker rat (fa-fa).
The lipoprotein lipase activity per adipocyte was increased in the genetically obese rat (fa/fa). However, there was no difference between obese and lean animals when the enzyme activities were related to adipocyte surface area. The possible implications of the findings are discussed.
متن کاملCellularity of adipose depots in the genetically obese Zucker rat.
Cell size and number of three adipose depots, epididymal, retroperitoneal, and subcutaneous, were determined during growth of the obese Zucker rat ("fatty") and nonobese Zucker control. Cellularity of these depots in the adult "fatty" was compared with that in nonobese controls and in nonobese Zucker rats made obese by ventromedial hypothalamic lesions. Epididymal and retroperitoneal depots in ...
متن کاملWaves of Adipose Tissue Growth in the Genetically Obese Zucker Fatty Rat
BACKGROUND In mammals, calories ingested in excess of those used are stored primarily as fat in adipose tissue; consistent ingestion of excess calories requires an enlargement of the adipose tissue mass. Thus, a dysfunction in adipose tissue growth may be a key factor in insulin resistance due to imbalanced fat storage and disrupted insulin action. Adipose tissue growth requires the recruitment...
متن کاملPurification and characterization of rat adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase.
Lipoprotein lipase (EC 3.1.1.34) extracted from adipose tissue of glucose-fed rats with 5 mM-sodium barbital, pH 7.5, containing 20% (v/v) glycerol and 0.1% (v/v) Triton X-100, was partially purified by affinity chromatography on heparin linked to Sepharose 4B. Sodium dodecyl sulphate/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis of the partially purified enzyme preparation revealed the presence of two ma...
